Mount of Corruption

2 Kings 23:10-24

10 And he defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter pass through the fire to Molech. 11 Then he removed the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun, at the entrance to the house of the Lord, by the chamber of Nathan-Melech, the officer who was in the court; and he burned the chariots of the sun with fire. 12 The altars that were on the roof, the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the Lord, the king broke down and pulverized there, and threw their dust into the Brook Kidron. 13 Then the king defiled the high places that were east of Jerusalem, which were on the south of the Mount of Corruption, which Solomon king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the people of Ammon. 14 And he broke in pieces the sacred pillars and cut down the wooden images, and filled their places with the bones of men.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary – 2 Kings 23:10-14

23:10–11. Topheth was the place where worshipers of Molech, the god of Ammon (cf. v. 13), burned their children as sacrifices. This was in the Valley of Ben Hinnom at the south side of Mount Zion (cf. Josh. 15:8). Josiah desecrated this site so that no idolater would worship there again. He also removed the sacred horses that were used in formal processions honoring the sun. These animals had been dedicated by the kings of Judah (probably Ahaz, Manasseh, and Amon) and were stabled in the temple courtyard. Josiah also burned up the ceremonial chariots used in these idolatrous processions.

23:12–14. Ahaz had evidently built an upper room on one of the buildings at the gate of the temple. On the roof near that structure Ahaz had built altars, probably to the stars and planets (cf. Zeph. 1:5; Jer. 19:13; 32:29). Hezekiah undoubtedly destroyed these altars but apparently Manasseh or Amon had rebuilt them.

Manasseh also had built altars in the temple courtyards (2 Kings 21:5). All these Josiah destroyed and tossed into the Kidron Valley (cf. 23:6). He also desecrated thealtars that had been erected on the southern hill of the Mount of Olives which became known as the Hill of Corruption. These altars dated back to Solomon’s reign (1 Kings 11:5, 7). Josiah removed all the pagan sacred stones and Asherah poles (cf. 2 Kings 23:6, 15) at that site also. Human bones rendered those sites unclean and unsuitable as places of worship thereafter.
