Valley of Gerar

Genesis 26:17-22

¹⁷ Then Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. ¹⁸ And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.

¹⁹ Also Isaac’s servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there. ²⁰ But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water isours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him. ²¹ Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah. ²² And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”

 

The Bible Knowledge Commentary – Genesis 26:17-22

Again wells provide a dominant motif: they are tangible evidence of divine blessing (cf. Abraham’s dispute with the Philistines over a well, 21:25, 30). No matter where Isaac dug, and no matter how often the Philistines stopped up the wells, he reopenedold dirt-filled wells (26:17). God’s blessing on Isaac could not be hindered.

Driven away by the Philistines, Isaac encamped in the Valley of Gerar, and continued his search for water. He faced opposition there too; the Gerarites claimed that the water from two of the three wells Isaac dug was theirs. The names he gave the three wells reflect not only his struggle but also his triumph: Esek (“dispute”) and Sitnah (“opposition”) reflect the conflict over two wells, and Rehoboth (“room”) represents the room provided by the Lord. Isaac refused to fight back. He continued to relinquish one well after another until the Philistines in frustration let him alone.

 

God in all His holiness is only your creator until you accept Him. After you accept Him, He becomes your God, your Father, your creator. He will cleanse you of your sins and accept you into the kingdom of His heaven and hear your prayers.

Love God with all your heart, all your mind, and all your soul. Also, love your neighbor as you love yourself.

God is testing us every day and has given us the right to make our own choices. Do you know which ones are the right choices in God’s mind?

Fear God, love God, honor God, and trust God with all your heart, mind and soul and you will receive and experience the joy of the promises of God’s blessings in His time. And always remember to ask the Father for His help and guidance in all things.

 

Prayer:   Father, we are grateful for Your Son our risen Christ and Your Spirit. We praise You for the opportunity to glorify Your Son and live with Him forever. We also praise you for the opportunity to be able to choose Jesus as our Lord and Savior and to be elect children of Yours. We praise you for the laws You have set down to teach us, to keep our lives in harmony, to learn how to treat others and how to live within your boundaries. Please bless those who have read this article for they too are seeking Your righteous truth, love, wisdom and understanding.

Father, I pray these brothers and sisters have or will come to realize that Your existence is a treasure of grace and love that You have for all Your elect children.

May God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and Christianity be our guiding lights for eternity. Let it be Your will Lord not mine. Please come Lord Jesus.
