On the East

Numbers 2:1-8

2 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: “Everyone of the children of Israel shall camp by his own standard, beside the emblems of his father’s house; they shall camp some distance from the tabernacle of meeting. On the east side, toward the rising of the sun, those of the standard of the forces with Judah shall camp according to their armies; and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be the leader of the children of Judah.” And his army was numbered at seventy-four thousand six hundred.

“Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar, and Nethanel the son of Zuar shall be the leader of the children of Issachar.” And his army was numbered at fifty-four thousand four hundred.

“Then comes the tribe of Zebulun, and Eliab the son of Helon shall be the leader of the children of Zebulun.” And his army was numbered at fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

“All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces with Judah, one hundred and eighty-six thousand four hundred—these shall break camp first.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary – Numbers 2:1-9

2:1–9. The Lord addressed the matter of the arrangement of the camp for the anticipated years of journey to Canaan. The nation was to have a set procedure of encampment and march in order to insure efficiency of procedure. The arrangement was to consist of four groups of three tribes each, one group on each side of the tabernacle. The tribe of Levi was to be divided by its major clans and placed immediately around the tabernacle. (See the sketch “Arrangement of the Tribal Camps” and the list “The Israelite Tribal Line of March.”)

Banners (’ōō, v. 2) or flags identified the individual families, and a standard (deel, vv.2–3) identified each three-tribe division. The three tribes on the east of the tabernacle were Judah.… Issachar, and Zebulun (vv. 3–9), with Judah the leader of the divisions (v. 9). The leader of Judah, Nashon son of Amminadab (v. 3), appears in later genealogies in the messianic line (cf. Ruth 4:20; Matt. 1:4). The tribes in this group represent the fourth, fifth, and sixth sons of Jacob by Leah (see comments on Num. 1:17–46). The east was the orientation of the tabernacle so the Judahite division led the moving procession.
