Demons are Cast into Swine

28 When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”

30 Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding. 31 So the demons begged Him, saying, “If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine.”

32 And He said to them, Go.” So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water.

33 Then those who kept them fled; and they went away into the city and told everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region.

Bible Knowledge Commentary – Matthew 8:28-34

8:28–34 (Mark 5:1–20; Luke 8:26–39). A more detailed account of Jesus’ authority in the demonic realm is seen in these verses. Jesus arrived … in the region of the Gadarenes. The name “Gadarenes” comes from the town of Gadara, the capital of the region about eight miles southeast of the southern tip of the Sea of Galilee. Mark and Luke wrote that the place was “the region of the Gerasenes” (Mark 5:1; Luke 8:26). For an explanation of this difference, see comments on those two verses. There Jesus met … two demon-possessed men. Mark and Luke wrote of one demon-possessed man, but they did not say only one. Presumably one of the two was more violent than the other.

The influence of the demons on these men was obvious for they were wild, violent men, forced out of the city and living in a graveyard (tombs). The demons’ two questions implied they knew who Jesus is—the Son of God—and also that His coming would ultimately mean their doom (Matt. 8:29). Rather than being forced to become disembodied spirits, the demons requested permission to enter a nearby large herd of pigs. Mark stated that this herd numbered “about 2,000” (Mark 5:13).

As soon as the demons entered them, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake, the Sea of Galilee, and drowned. Obviously, those keeping the herd were frightened and went into the nearby town to report this incredible event. The people of the town went out, and because of fear (Luke 8:37), pleaded with Jesus … to leave their region.

Demons are cast into swine: Two demon possessed men met Jesus near a lake. The demons in them spoke to Jesus and spoke as if they knew of Him. They asked Jesus if they came out of the men if they could go into a herd of swine near them. Jesus said “Go”. After entering the swine, then the swine ran into the Lake. When the local towns people learned of the incident they came out and pleaded with Jesus to leave the region.
