Setting an Example

When it comes to following or being an example, Jesus Christ is our ultimate example when we consider how to live our lives personally and as a leader. His examples come from several points of view such as: from an eternal perspective, forgiving, humility, loving, sacrifice for others, self-giving, servant hood and setting examples of living our lives in Christ likeness.

Christ is our example

Eternal perspective

Hebrews 12:2    looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Colossians 3:13    13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

Philippians 2:5-12    Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

John 13:34    34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

Ephesians 5:2    And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

Sacrifice for others

1 John 3:16    16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

2 Corinthians 8:9    For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

Matthew 20:28    28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:43-45    43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Luke 22:27    27 For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.

1 Peter 2:21    21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

Good examples

Be an example by doing good deeds

Titus 2:7    in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility,

Being an example to all believers

1 Timothy 4:12    Take Heed to Your Ministry

12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

Imitate apostles and Lord

1 Thessalonians 1:6, 7    And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe.

Leaders lead by good example

1 Peter 5:3    nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;

Prophets, examples of patience

James 5:10    10 My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience.

Heavenly Father is our Example

Luke 6:36    36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

Leviticus 11:44    44 For I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

Commentary:  The whole set of food laws is summarized by the repetition of selected examples (vv. 41–43). As God’s people were to distinguish between clean and unclean animals, so God had distinguished between them and other nations. These food regulations were to serve as a perpetual reminder of the holiness of God and His grace in choosing Israel (v. 45).

Leviticus 19:2    “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.

Matthew 5:48    48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Paul as an example

Follow Paul’s example

1 Corinthians 4:16    16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me.

1 Corinthians 11:1    1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

Philippians 3:17    17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.

Some good examples for Christians to follow are: Be a good example to all believers by doing good deeds, imitate the Lord and the apostles,  the leaders lead by good example and the prophets are a good example of patience to follow. God is a good example of compassion, holiness and being perfect. Paul encouraged his followers to use him as a pattern as he imitated Jesus.

Christ’s word today is to “remember,” “repent,” and “obey,” just as it was to the church in Sardis.

The Holy Spirit (who is another Comforter, source of power and your instructor) wants you to know the high position that God, the Father, has bestowed on those who believe in God and His Son Jesus Christ. You are or can be co-heirs with Christ and you will reign with Him for 1000 years. It comes when we humble ourselves, submit ourselves to Christ and offer ourselves as living examples, just as Jesus lived His life on earth.

God is testing us every day and has given us the right to make our own choices. Do you know which ones are the right choices in Gods mind?

Fear God, love God, honor God, and trust God with all your heart, mind and soul and you will receive and experience the promises of God’s blessings in His time.
