The Authority of Jesus Christ is Seen in His Teaching

Jesus Christ claims authority for his own words

Luke 4:18 (NKJV)

18  The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,

Because He has anointed Me

To preach the gospel to the poor;

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives

And recovery of sight to the blind,

To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

Matthew 5:21–22 (NKJV)

Murder

21 You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.

Matthew 5:27–28 (NKJV)

Adultery

27 You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Matthew 12:41–42 (NKJV)

41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

Matthew 17:5 (NKJV)

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”

Mark 2:5 (NKJV)

When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”

Mark 8:38 (NKJV)

38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

Mark 13:26 (NKJV)

26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

John 4:24 (NKJV)

24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

John 6:63 (NKJV)

63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

John 13:13 (NKJV)

13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.

John 15:3 (NKJV)

You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

His authority is recognized by others

Matthew 7:28–29 (NKJV)

Response to the Sermon

28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Matthew 22:33;46 (NKJV)

33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.

46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.

Mark 1:22 (NKJV)

22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”

His authority is questioned and opposed by others

Matthew 26:65–68 (NKJV)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! 66 What do you think?”

They answered and said, “He is deserving of death.”

67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”

Luke 4:28–30 (NKJV)

28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.
