Soft Heart

Having a soft heart is paramount to being a Good Christian. It can also be a deterrent to wrath.

Proverbs 15:1

A soft answer turneth away wrath; But a grievous word stirreth up anger.

2The tongue of the wise uttereth knowledge aright; But the mouth of fools poureth out folly.

3The eyes of Jehovah are in every place, Keeping watch upon the evil and the good.

4A gentle tongue is a tree of life; But perverseness therein is a breaking of the spirit.

Commentary: 15:1    A gentle (lit.; “soft”) answer can dispel a potentially tense situation by dissolving a person’s wrath. Being conciliatory in such a situation requires forethought, patience, self-control, and kindness, virtues commonly lauded in Proverbs. A harsh (lit., “hurtful”) word, by contrast, arouses rather than dissolves anger.

Proverbs 15:23

23A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth; And a word in due season, how good is it!

Commentary:15:23   Appropriately spoken words (cf. 25:11-12), saying the right thing at the right time, delights (śāmaḥ; see comments on 15:20) not only the hearer but also the one who says them. Timely words (whether of love, encouragement, rebuke, or peacemaking) are beneficial.

Proverbs 25:11

11  A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold

     In settings of silver.

Commentary: 11-12. An appropriate and properly timed word (cf. 15:23; 24:26)-which sometimes may be a rebuke can be attractive and valuable, like gold apples set against a silver sculpture or carving, or like a gold earring or other ornament.
