The self-righteous condemn other people. They have an empty claim of no sin. The self-righteous must get rid of the log in their eye  so they may see clearly to remove the log from another’s eye. Those that think or say that they are holier than thou brings smoke to God’s nostrils. Hypocrites call on Lord but will not obey Him. Hypocrites show themselves to be clean on the outside but filthy on the inside.

Condemnation of other people

Matthew 9:11-13    11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Empty claim of no sin

Jeremiah 2:35    35 Yet you say, ‘Because I am innocent,

Surely His anger shall turn from me.’

Behold, I will plead My case against you,

Because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’

Foolishness involved

Job 9:20    20 Though I were righteous, my own mouth would condemn me; Though I were blameless, it would prove me perverse.

Get rid of log from own eye

Matthew 7:5   5  Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

God detests

Isaiah 65:5    5   Who say, ‘Keep to yourself,

Do not come near me,

For I am holier than you!’

These are smoke in My nostrils,

A fire that burns all the day.

Holier than thou

Luke 18:9    Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

Hypocrites call on the Lord but will not obey

Luke 6:46     46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?

Hypocrites clean on outside, filthy on inside

Luke 11:39    39 Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness.

Luke 16:15    15 And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

Involves boastfulness

Matthew 23:30   30 and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’

Jesus speaks against

Matthew 23:27, 28    27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.

Pure in their own eyes

Proverbs 30:12    12 There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, Yet is not washed from its filthiness.

Reject God’s graciousness

Romans 10:3    For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.

Way of fool seems right

Proverbs 12:15    15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.

Jesus spoke out against scribes and Pharisees and hypocrites for they appear beautiful on the outside and are full of dead men’s bones and all un-cleanliness. There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes but is not washed from their filthiness. They reject God’s graciousness for they are ignorant of His righteousness and seek to establish their own righteousness and have not submitted to God’s righteousness. The way of the fool seems right to them but he who heeds council is wise.

1 Corinthians 10:32      32 Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God.

God is testing us every day and has given us the right to make our own choices. Do you know which ones are the right choices in Gods mind?

Fear God, love God, honor God, and trust God with all your heart, mind and soul and you will receive and experience the joy of the promises of God’s blessings in His time.
